  • The device is not reacting properly when using the tapping function, what's wrong?

The tapping function (available only on SF-710S and SF-510F) is quite different from other devices; like a smartphone touch panel. This device detects vibration when the device is tapped, simply touching the device will not be recognised due to the lack of vibration.

Try tapping on the glass (the LCD) a little harder.

  • Why is nothing displayed on the LCD?

If the battery power level is low, the LCD is turned off to minimise the power consumption. Charge the device as soon as possible.

    1. Activate the GPS to automatically set the time.
    2. You can also adjust the time manually, in system setting menu.

  • The unit loses or changes the time suddenly. Why?
    1. If the [Time Zone] setting on the device is set to Manual and you travel to a different time zone, the time shown may be incorrect.
    2. If the battery runs low, the time shown on the device may be incorrect. Ensure that the device is fully charged.

  • What is the time keeping accuracy of this device?

    ±60 seconds per month.

  • I have moved to a different time zone, how can I adjust the time?

If the [Time Zone] setting in the system setting menu is set to Auto the correct time zone can be selected by simply executing a GPS search (or execute Time Adjust in the system setting menu).

  • How does this product measure altitude?

Altitude (above sea level) is calculated using the GPS signal.

  • How accurate is the altitude measurement function?

Since altitude is only calculated using GPS signal, it varies depending on the conditions of the GPS signal reception.

  • Can I change the sound volume level?

  • How long can it take to find a GPS signal?

It can take up to 2 minutes to find a GPS signal. If it takes more than 2 minutes, or if "Failed" is displayed, please try an alternative location.

  • Why does it recommend to wait more than 15 minutes after completing GPS searching (positioning)?
How long should I wait to use the device after completing a GPS search?

After searching for a GPS signal, wait 15 minutes. The reason for this is to allow the device to process complex GPS navigation data.

  • GPS signals are hard to receive or frequently interrupted, what can I do?

GPS requires clear line of sight with at least 3 GPS satellites. Ensure you are not surrounded by tall buildings, trees or other obstacles.

  • How accurate is the GPS positioning?

It varies depending on the environment.

  • How accurate is the distance?

It varies depending on the environment.

  • How accurate is the speed tracking?

  • Can latitude/longitude be displayed on the LCD?

Latitude/longitude can be displayed by specifying it as an item to be displayed in [Screen] setting of [Mes. Setting menu].

  • Can the detail information of GPS satellite be displayed?

By selecting [GPS] in [Mes. Setting menu], the number of GPS satellites that are being captured, can be displayed.

Any other information about GPS satellites (e.g. geometry) cannot be displayed.

  • What does the "Satellite" icon mean on the LCD while the GPS search is in progress?

As a reference, it indicates GPS signal receiving status as below:

1 icon or blinking = # of captured GPS satellite is less than 3 (still searching)
3 icons (rightmost icon is blinking/the rest are ON) = 5 GPS satellite captured (wait for GPS signal reception become stable)
4 icons (rightmost icon is blinking/the rest are ON) = More than 6 GPS satellite captured (preparing for GPS search completion)

  • How much data can be recorded?

Time: (total distance time): 70 hours
Laps: (per one split): 400 laps

  • What happens if the device memory is full?

The LCD displays a FULL message, and any new measurement data will overwrite the oldest data entry.

  • What is Chronograph?

It is the function to simultaneously measure/record split time (elapsed time from the start point to the next point) and lap time (elapsed time of each section).

  • What is Indoor mode, what kind of measurements can be made?

Indoor mode is available only with the SF-510F and SF-710S. In Indoor mode the GPS signal is disabled and any actions that are calculated/measured using GPS signal will not operate.

  • When I made a measurement by skipping the GPS search, the date of the measurement was incorrect. Should this happen?

The time and date information is not defined if a GPS search is stopped, and the measurement data is recorded with the system default (2013/01/02).

  • How is Average pace calculated?

Average pace = Split time / Total distance

  • How is Average speed calculated?

Average speed = Total distance / Split time

  • How is Average pitch calculated?

Pitch is a number of steps per minute, and the average pitch is an average of pitches counted from the start of the measurement up to now.

Average pitch = (Total of pitch value that were able to collect during the split)/(Number of pitch that were able to collect during the split)

  • How is Average stride calculated?

Stride is a length of one step, and the average stride is an average of strides measured from the start of measurement up to now.

Average stride = (Total of stride value collected during the split)/(Number of strides that are collected during the split)

  • How does the Auto pause function work?

The device checks the status of movement (stopped or moving) using the GPS signal and built-in stride sensor (acceleration sensor).

If the device senses that movement has stopped, measurement may be temporarily stopped.

  • What are the different Activity types in [Mes. Setting] menu?

Run - For running or jogging
    Walk - For walking
Bike - For outdoor biking and when performing exercises that do not require you to swing your arms

  • Can measurements be made in [Indoor mode] while selecting "Run" or "Walk"?

Yes, you can measure Running/Walking activity in [Indoor mode].

There are certain limitations in this mode as [Indoor mode] does not use GPS signal.

  • Can I use this device on a stationary bike?

No, due to the stride sensor and GPS being unavailable in this mode.

  • How can I switch the measurement screen?

Refer to the User's Guide for information on this.

  • What is a heart rate monitor?

A heart rate monitor is a personal monitoring device which allows you to measure your heart rate in real time or record the heart rate for later study.

  • Can I wear the HRM (SFHRM01) to measure my heart rate while swimming?

No, it is not designed to be operated under water.

  • Is the HRM (SFHRM01) battery life affected when using GPS?

The battery life is decreased by approx. 10 - 15% when using GPS.

  • What is the battery life of the HRM?

Approximately 1.5 years based upon 1 hour a day usage. This may vary depending on the operating environment conditions.

  • Why will the heart rate monitor not pair with my device?

    Check the following:

    1. Check if the heart rate monitor is being worn correctly and tightly around the chest. It is also recommended to moisten the electrodes on the HR belt.
    2. Check if the HRM belt is firmly attached to the HR monitor unit.

If you still have a problem after checking the above, reset the HRM unit by following the procedures explained in the WEB user's guide.

  • What should I do if an inaccurate heart rate is displayed or the signal is lost?

If this occurs frequently, try the below:

    1. Ensure the electrodes on the HR belt are sufficiently moist.
    2. Ensure the heart rate monitor is worn correctly and tightly around the chest.
    3. Clean the snap buttons of both the HR monitor unit and the HR belt, and re-attach them.

If the problem persists, try resetting the HRM or replace the battery.

  • How does this product calculate calorie consumption?

The calorie consumption is calculated based on measurement of speed/time and the user profile information.

  • Is the calculated calorie consumption value changed if the workout type setting (run, walk, bike) is changed?

Since the calorie consumption calculation parameter changes in accordance with the workout, the results of calculation also varies.

  • What is the stride sensor?

A stride sensor is used for monitoring/learning your pace (running, walking) from your actual speed and body vibration frequency.

Stride sensor is only available with the SF-710S and SF-510F models.

  • How do I enable the stride sensor?

On the SF-710S and SF-510F models the built-in stride sensor is enabled unless (Bike) is selected, for this activity type it is not used.

  • Will the stride sensor work in a tunnel?

Yes, on the SF-710S and SF-510F models the built-in stride sensor will work without a GPS signal.
